Well, it’s been a while. Frankly, it’s just been too painful to write but with a growing concern in the air I need to dispel a nasty rumor. Some unnamed source started a vicious rumor that after our bitter defeat in the Tradition Member Guest, I caused my partner, Tommy Covelli to become injured. The rumor started based on my misinterpreted reaction after Tommy failed to chip in from 25 yards off the green on the final hole to extend the match. I may have uttered something that sounded disrespectful to his chipping ability but it was in no way directed at my able and beloved partner.
I was actually smarting over the relentless and truly disrespectful play of Pat Penuel in the shootout as he and his partner, who obviously should be playing on the PGA tour, refused to lay down and give us what was rightfully ours. The most inflicting event in the tournament occurred on the very last hole, the second time we played #9, a par 5, when Pat stepped up on the tee box oblivious to what should have been enormous pressure and ripped a 250+ yard drive right down the middle of the fairway. Adding insult to the injury, the tee shot was followed an even more incredible shot by Rory McElroy disguised as Pat’s partner. From my vantage point, it looked pretty darn good as it rose on a remarkable trajectory curling over the towering treetops while casting a shadow on the water and gently landed who knows where. The crowd of about 150 was silent. Was he in the water, the bunker, sail over the crowd? No, not even close. His ball was 6 feet behind a back left pin! I mean who the hell can hit that shot on Tuesday afternoon with a bag of shag balls, much less under tournament pressure? And for crying out loud, are we playing in front of a bunch of disinterested drunks? Alas, we make a par while Pat and Rory birdied for the win. The consolation is we didn’t lose we just got beat……down. And I later apologized to Tommy. Assuming he heals in time, I hope to give it another shot next year. I predict Pat will win an Autumn cruise for 2 couples. And it is with reluctant humility, grace and incredible sportsmanship I must say….. congr..ag…. con…$669l,…..congratl;n[sdgs, con.asva[rb, adnvfa., djb.bdsfv fdonpdvsd…..vsf….!2rf. X C… C o n g r a t u l a t i o n s Pat and R o r y!! Love you, mean it.
Here is the injury for which I swear I had nothing to do with.
Moving on to this month’s fitness report. We all know how important it is to stay fit and flexible in order to get the most out of your golf swing. Some golfers spend hours in the gym sculpting at perfect body. Strengthening your core produces powerful rotation and with increased flexibility your extended shoulder turn loads up the coil that can unleash increased swing extension and greater club head speed. This transfer of mass concentrates maximum compression at impact projecting the balls to maximum distance. It’s also equally important to increase your stamina through increased cardio and a healthy lifestyle. Some of our Rock Floggers, like Bryan Guthrie are truly dedicated to this practice and he was eager to share an example of his fitness routine.
Troubling to say the least.
Of course there really is no scientific proof that this makes a rats ass. On the other hand, we have Craig Stadler, John Daily, Jimenez and even a pudgy Jack Nicklaus who were all pretty good sticks. So screw the gym, smoke, drink eat good food and the golf will take care of itself.
Ya’ll hit em straight, and by that I mean not like anyone hit them last week in Floggers. That was embarrassing.
